Earlier this week we caught up with Jacob Ramirez, the Featured Broadway Bound student from CYT San Antonio! He spoke with us about the Broadway Bound workshops, what it was like to work with Actor Anthony C. Daniel, and why he was “surprised” by being featured.
Did you enjoy the Broadway Bound “Triple Threat” workshops more so than any other workshops you’ve attended?
Yes, I enjoyed the workshop very much! The teacher was great, and we all learned a lot in such a short amount of time. He [Daniel] also helped me to understand that once you have applied everything you know in performing, you just need to start running on instinct and focus on actually acting.
You mentioned you were “surprised” by being picked as the Featured Broadway Bound Student. Why?
As it was explained, the [featured] student [is someone] who puts everything on the line when performing in the workshop and who fully submerged themselves in the experience. I was very surprised that he chose me! I am a terrible dancer in my opinion, and dancing was about 55% of the three part class….
Any words of advice/tricks of the trade from Anthony C. Daniel?
Some really great advice on auditions and performance in general from Mr. Daniel was to just act out absolutely EVERYTHING. If dancing isn’t your strongest skill, then just do your best, but ACT it as much as you can. A singer with a great voice and a technically correct dancer will often lose a prospective role to someone who can do neither, but they are extremely expressive and give it their all emotionally and physically.
Any memorable stories from the workshop?
What was really amazing to me personally was how fast Mr. Daniels could actually do the dance he was teaching us! He would sort of fast forward through it every now and then to catch up in his head and he seemed to do every single move at super speed as he was thinking!
