Sigh. I just love CYT students. I recently got a chance to speak with CYT North Idaho student Kalla Mort and she’s a gem of a human. In the below interview, we discuss her various roles, her favorite CYT moments, and what she’s up to now. Enjoy!
How did you first get involved with CYT?
A family friend of mine invited me to come see her in Snow White. And after, that I auditioned for Jungle Book and was hooked from the start!
As you know, CYT is one huge pseudo-family that loves to spread the love to actual family members. Are your siblings or parents involved?
I have three siblings – two older sisters and a younger brother. My older sister Kelsea was only able to do a few shows before graduating, and my brother Bryson only did one show. My mom always loves being a part of the Make-Up Committee. She loves being around all of the CYTers and being able to connect with them on their level!
What has surprised you the most about the world of theater?
Probably the instant familial bond you have with your fellow actors. Even outside of CYT, the family aspect is there. I never realized you could find a group of “misfits” and imperfect people who still love and support each other like a family would.
Tell me about your experience at the CYT EXPO.
I had a great time at this year’s EXPO! My favorite experience was the workshops! It was amazing being able to work with such skilled artists. I learned a lot from them and loved what they had to say or show.
What has been the best part about CYT for you?
The friendships! I have built friendships through CYT that I know will last a lifetime.
When you’re not doing CYT, what can we find you doing?
If I’m not at CYT, I’m usually involved in local community theatre productions or concert series. I’m always doing something with my voice! But with all that aside, I love spending quality time with the people I care about!
What’s been your favorite show that you’ve been in?
One of my favorite shows was Tarzan! I absolutely loved all of the cast and crew that were a part of that show! The show itself has such a beautiful message and it was a privilege to be able to present the story to a new audience every night. Every night we would pray backstage that the audience would be touched by the beautiful message of love and acceptance that show gave and would hopefully, in turn, impact someone else’s life.
What about your favorite roles?
Some of my favorite roles were Belle (Beauty and the Beast), Narrator (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat), Oompa Loompa (Willy Wonka), Dorothy (Wizard of Oz), and Kala (Tarzan).
Look at you go! Broadway bound! While we’re on the subject, is that in your future perhaps? What’s the dream?
I graduated from high school and am currently searching for a college! My dream for the future is to serve my Lord and Savior in any way He sees fit. He gave me the gift of music and I hope to share that gift with others in a way that will impact people for His glory.
I have no doubt that you will. Thanks for talking with me, Kalla!
