CYT Richmond’s HYPE hosted a Mission Day during Wizard of Oz rehearsal on Saturday, October 3rd. Each Saturday we have a theme (usually dress-up day), one theme Mission-oriented, with the goal of reaching out to the community. For the past two years, HYPE has worked with an organization called Youth Life, an after-school program for at-risk elementary students in urban communities.
They LOVE the magic of theater!
This month, Youth Life sent out a plea due to funding cuts. They didn’t have enough money to take the kids to the pumpkin patch and several of their other “earned” outings. Called to action, CYT’s Mission Day was to raise at least $150 through a cast-wide loose change competition: Ozians vs. Munchkins. HYPE students dressed up, brought a pumpkin bowl for each team, introduced the day with crazy skits and presented a poster with photos of the Youth Life kids. By the end of the day, we had collected almost $500 in loose change! This will help fund events for these kids for much of the year.
This partnership has been an amazing way for our HYPE students to learn how to use their drama gifts to serve others in the community. CYT has been a wonderful enrichment for the Youth Life students who just do not have the opportunity to experience theater otherwise. These Youth Life kids come from broken, low income homes and have such challenging environments. Youth Life provides them a safe place to learn social skills, get help with schooling, learn the bible, and experience the world at events like a CYT show. We love supporting them in any way we can!
CYT Richmond sends HYPE students each week to tutor individual Youth Life kids and each month to lead drama workshops for their “Fun Fridays.” They also provide around 50 show tickets each each session so that the kids will have an opportunity to see Musical Theater.
